I regularly get press releases from drivers, teams, manufacturers, and NASCAR, but this gem I received today was too good not to share in its entirety. Fans of NASCAR history, or the Wood Brothers, or even just looking for a great read will enjoy this piece.  - Carol

Since NASCAR announced Glen Wood as a member of the 2012 Hall of Fame class, his family has been on a hunt for artifacts from Wood Brothers Racing’s earliest years. What are they looking for? Anything and everything that shows how important NASCAR is to the family and what they’ve given back through dedication and innovation.

This week at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Wood Brothers Racing will unveil a Glen Wood tribute paint scheme on the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion, driven by Trevor Bayne. Bayne and the crew will even wear matching throw-back uniforms.

15th Anniversary of Labonte Brother Milestone at Atlanta Motor Speedway
This year’s AdvoCare 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Atlanta Motor Speedway marks the 15th anniversary of a historic day for both NASCAR and one of the sport’s greatest brother duos to ever compete.
On November 10, 1996, Terry Labonte entered the NAPA 500 leading the point standings while playing injured. During the previous weekend’s events at Phoenix, the elder Labonte had fell victim to a stuck throttle in practice, crashing his No. 5 Chevrolet into the wall and breaking his left hand. Labonte was able to nurse his Hendrick Motorsports ride home that day with a third-place finish, giving him a 47-point lead heading into the season’s final race at AMS. A finish of eighth or better would lock up Terry’s second points title, making him the 1996 champion.
Meanwhile, Terry’s younger brother, Bobby, was finishing up his fourth full-time season behind the wheel of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries machine. After winning three races the prior season, the 1996 campaign had been somewhat of a disappointment for the team. The Joe Gibbs Racing team entered Atlanta winless for the season, and Labonte was looking to use the season’s final race as a springboard for 1997.

Press release from ESPN:

Bestwick, Briscoe to Expand Roles in ESPN’s NASCAR Coverage

Allen Bestwick and Nicole Briscoe, two veterans of ESPN’s NASCAR coverage team, will have expanded roles as ESPN’s telecasts of the final 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races of the season begin next week.

Bestwick, who has filled a variety of positions since ESPN returned to live NASCAR event coverage in 2007, will move into the booth as the lap-by-lap announcer for all ESPN NASCAR Sprint Cup telecasts, including races, practices and qualifying. He will be joined by analysts Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree when ESPN starts its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series coverage with the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 31.

Briscoe, who has been a host and reporter for ESPN2’s daily NASCAR news and information program NASCAR Now since joining ESPN in 2008, and a fill-in host for the pre-race NASCAR Countdown show since 2010, will become the regular NASCAR Countdown host for all NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series telecasts on ESPN. Briscoe will work with analysts Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty in the ESPN Pit Studio at racetracks. Bestwick has been in the NASCAR Countdown host role since midway through the 2007 season.

[An email sent by Roger Curtis]

What should have been a shining moment for the sport of NASCAR and all the racetracks, especially those in the Midwest, has sadly, potentially, put all of us back several steps – maybe even years.

A sellout NASCAR race at Kentucky Speedway should have signaled the continuation of great things for race fans in the Midwest and for our sport.

Unfortunately Saturday’ night’s events became an exercise in blame and unpreparedness – and race fans, corporate partners, media and drivers were caught in the middle.

As a track promoter I am saddened and embarrassed about what happened this weekend. To think all the hard work that we’ve done here at Michigan International Speedway and other tracks have done could be so quickly erased by Saturday’s events. That speedway, having been open for racing since 2000, should have known the challenges it would face when it tripled in size.

Just to be clear: This isn’t about kicking a race track when it’s down. We all make mistakes and MIS has certainly had past issues with traffic.

For Immediate Release:

Jennifer Jo Cobb Comments on Not Starting at Bristol Motor Speedway:

"It feels like such a 'Jerry Maguire' moment. There were rumblings all week about us start and parking this race. I have a commitment to my sponsors, my fans, NASCAR that I won't start and park. I'm very serious about my career and my performance, and I've worked hard to prove it to everyone.

The conversation was never had with me until 10 minutes before the race that I was to start and park. I had already bought tires for the race, so you can imagine that this was a blow to my principles and my finances to get this news. As the owner of 2nd Chance, he has the right to ask NASCAR to black flag me and said he would do that if I didn't comply.

Since its inception, NASCAR has been a sport of statistics.  From lap times to RPMs, the numbers behind the speed have captivated millions and provided a quantifiable measuring stick for evaluating racing greatness.

However as the Chase heads to Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Oct. 17, multiple teams will be running pink paint schemes to recognize some drastically scarier Breast Cancer Awareness Month statistics...

Concord, N.C., May 22, 2009 – Ladies and gentlemen, start your grills!  Coca-Cola ignited the summer BBQ season Memorial Day weekend by firing up the nation’s longest grill at the site of NASCAR’s longest race, the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Requiring more than 7,000 pounds of Kingsford® Charcoal, the monster-sized ring of fire measured an astonishing 1,320 feet and would span more than four football fields in length if stretched end to end.  The colossal grill was used to cook up a feast for fans attending the “Coca-Cola Quarter-Mile Cookout” on Friday, May 22.

"In over 15 years of racing in the Sprint Cup Series, I can't remember a time when the sport's landscape looks as it does today. Saying that, Petty Enterprises and I had serious and very sincere discussions about what was best for myself and everyone involved at Petty Enterprises moving forward. These discussions culminated with us agreeing that moving in a separate direction will be the greatest way to reach our end goals. It was by no means an easy decision. I am, and will always be, very appreciative of what Richard Petty and the Petty family, every employee of Petty Enterprises and members of Boston Ventures did to invest in bettering my career the past three seasons."

Ryan Newman gets down and dirty on this week's Alltel Racing Podcast, talking about where it all began for him as a driver- dirt track racing. As the 2008 Daytona 500 Champion returned to his home state of Indiana this weekend for the Brickyard, he discussed the impact that dirt track racing has had on his career. "As a driver, when you it make it to the top level, you have had dirt track experience," said Newman who plans to race a late model dirt car in Charlotte this fall. Newman says, Newman tells listeners that if he were in charge of NASCAR he would add Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio to the Cup Series because it's more enjoyable for both the drivers and the fans.
