I Was Just Wonderin'...

Thanks, Bass Pro, But What Do You Do With a Seven-Foot Bronze Turkey?

Category: I Was Just Wonderin'...

I wonder what the turn-around time is for a commercial being filmed this week in Kannapolis  until we see it on ESPN. And I wonder how Dale Earnhardt will be incorporated into the ad.

Kevin Harvick will have a red, white, and blue paint scheme from Budweiser for six races this summer, and that reminded me of something amusing... Watching a documentary the other day of Amish youth that have moved away from their communities, one of them was wearing a Budweiser racing cap, and I wondered - was this young Amish man first drawn to Bud as his favorite team because of the Clydesdales? And I wonder, like non-Amish kids dream of fancy cars, was his childhood dream to one day have a Clydesdale pulling his modest buggy?

So Jeffrey Earnhardt is a cage-fighter, evidently. Best part of this news is he says, "My next race is in a few weeks, so I felt comfortable that now is a good time." Translate: If I get the crap beat out of me on May 22nd, I still have six and a half weeks to recover before Daytona.

So NASCAR has signed an MOU with the EPA which is a Memorandum of Understanding with the Environmental Protection Agency. Why is this even necessary? I'm pretty sure we can all live peacefully without any memorandums of understanding. Too many suits are getting paid for ridiculous jobs, among them orchestrating press conferences to announce such things as an MOU. And the press information on this "agreement" is just as vague as similar press conferences for "Beyond Sport" and the Twitter affiliation. (Best question in that one, by the way, was "Who's paying who in this? Is NASCAR paying Twitter, or is Twitter paying NASCAR?" The question, as you might have guessed, was dodged by a Twitter man in a suit.)

And along those lines, a company called Green Smoke will sponsor T.J. Bell in the Coke 600. Green Smoke. Right. If you've done any amount of reading about the dangers of these tobacco-replacements, you've probably already found out that they aren't any better for you than the pack of Marlboros for which you traded them in the first place.

David Reutimann seems to be fitting in quite nicely with the BK Racing bunch, so much so that they're fielding a third car for him for the eight races when he's kicked out of his Tommy Baldwin ride. I wonder if by November we'll be hearing about a contract for next year to run every race for BK. And yes, we'll have fries with that!

Bass Pro Shops awarded Tony with a seven-foot-tall bronze statue of a wild turkey. What in the world do you do with such a thing as THAT?

And one more thing I was just wonderin'...

How long do you suppose it'll be until we see Rick Hendrick's ride on Jimmie's car as an entry on an episode of SPEED's THE TEN. Do you file that under 10 Best All Star moments, 10 Best Victory Laps, or 10 Best Ride-Alongs?

After hearing about that Golf Cart Surfing deal I'm shocked that Rick even got on the car with JJ driving it.

If he fell off it would have made top billing on Dumbest Stuff on Wheels

Seeing how the left wing radicals are running the EPA now it's likely the EPA forced Nascar to sign that MOU. But of course if nothing happens now I'm sure the EPA would shut Nascar down. After all they seem to hate cars that use gas as much as they hate the refineries that make the gas.

SPEED'S THE TEN? Is that show still on? I thought it was cancelled when they had to make way for the latest greatest reality show all about the exciting world of an auto parts store.

I dunno about the dangers of Green Smokes, but if you go to their website, they have a cool little graphic of the race car on track.
Unfortunately, the car is going the wrong way on the track.
That will certainly get some sponsorship coverage, if TJ Bell decides to mimic his sponsors website...

I don't know what Tony Stewart would do with a seven-foot bronze turkey, but if I had one I'd totally put it out in the yard! Mrs. Luvracing got a six-foot airblown one for Thanksgiving last year, which is cute, but a bronze one you could leave out all year 'round!

On the other hand...we get actual wild turkeys wandering through our yard from time to time. Wonder what they'd think of a bronze one? Could start a whole entire turkey religion, if we're not careful....

I'm wondering why Rick Hendrick and/or Jimmie Johnson didn't get fined for that ride-along stunt last week. Doesn't NASCAR have a rule about crew members riding on race cars en-route to Victory Lane? I remember years ago a bunch of pit guys rode on a race-winning car, and got into trouble for it.

So, NASCAR and the EPA are in cahoots, huh? I read the agreement (well, the part that didn't make my brain hurt), and it does have its moments. One of its clauses calls for more environmentally friendly concession items such as napkins, cups, and so forth. If they can come up with a hotdog wrapper that will biodegrade before it clogs up a race car grill in Michigan, I'd be all for that!

I know what NASCAR does with a 7 foot turkey. They put him in the booth and call him Brad.

The NASCAR/Twitter thing still confuses me. What is going to be viewed with the #NASCAR hashtag and what isn't. As well as what sort of junk am I going to get on my Twitter feed from it.

EPA is a scary organization. Having read about what some of the past heads of that organization have done and the contempt with which some have held the auto industry, I would never consider getting partnered up with them.

I'd pursue some "green" initiatives as they made sense (practical, cost effective, etc.).

Still imagining Flintstones car flipping on it's side because the Bronto Ribs were too heavy when I think of Rick Hendrick hanging outside of the 48.

@ jim 88 ("left wing radicals ... running the EPA") and DennisM ("scary organization")

- That version of The People's Republic of Santa Monica would run amok & mandate a NA$CAR grid of Volts and Priuses.

@dj88law:

Nothing wrong with electric race cars. USAC is working on an electric midget - the idea is to have an indoor series with them, but they're not far off from being competitive with the gas version (they need to shave another 100lbs off). If they succeed, plan is to look at electric TQs and Sprints.

Hey, Tony's not married; no wife to complain about a 7' bronze turkey. He'll probably put it in the living room. I agree that it would make good yard art.

JEERS to NASCAR for playing into the memorandum of understanding with the EPA. My understanding is the government continues to waste too much of our tax dollars on non-sense like this...

CHEERS to Carol for calling out the MOU and the so-called e-cigarettes...
