"I believe anybody who tells you he is unbiased is a liar. Being human gives you bias, and you can't avoid that. The best you can ever hope to be is fair."

Friday's Top 10

A Giant Flag, A Three-Way Tie, and Greatest NASCAR Nicknames

Category: Friday's Top 10

10 wins is the most ever achieved at Talladega, and it was done by Dale Earnhardt (of course).

9 thousand laps (or more) is something that has been achieved by only three men at Talladega. Dave Marcis, Bill Elliott, and Ricky Rudd have each raced more than 9,000 laps in their combined total of 176 races.

8 of the last 11 races at Talladega have been won by a Chevrolet. Actually, they've won 21 of the last 25, but I couldn't very well fit either of those numbers into my top 10, so there you have it.

7 races have been won by FORD at Talladega in the last twenty years. Yes, only seven. In 42 years of racing at this track, FORD has found victory lane just 18 times. Maybe because guys named Earnhardt were driving around wearing bow ties.

6 of the best names ever to race at Talladega: Bub Strickler, Slick Gardner, Bosco Lowe, Doc Faustina, Iggy Katona, and Slick Johnson. Why don't they make great racing nicknames anymore?

5 thousand dollars was earned over the course of 12 races for one Elmo Langley. There's no record of what his true earnings were at Talladega, but my estimates are that he'd place well inside the top-ten on the list of most laps led.

4 is the number of times Talladega has been resurfaced. It's also the record number of consecutive wins, held by Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

3 notables are tied with three wins each at Talladega. Pearson, Yarborough, and Allison, though not the Allison you may think. David, Cale, and Davey are tied for wins, but I bet Cale would make sure the other two knew he had far more top-ten and top-five finishes than they do; nearly as many as the two of them combined, in fact!

2 weeks in a row the series has gone to a race track where Joey Logano has the best average finish, and at both of those tracks, Mark Martin also has the most top-tens.

1 flag, measuring 30' x 60' (you always wondered just how big it was, didn't you?) flies over Talladega Speedway with more splendor than any other flag at any other speedway, and is by far our favorite one in the country!

9 thousand laps? wow!

and I'd venture that Elmo ranks way up there in laps led too. ;)

I dunno, I always thought that "Smoke Johnson" and "Rowdy Busch" were perfectly good racing nicknames.

I mean nicknames that have been with a person his whole life. And ones that replace his first name, not just reference him. Like Buddy Baker, Buckshot Jones...et al. We simply don't know them as any other name, and that's different than an alias (which is what Smoke started as).
