Fireball Roberts won the first Atlanta race, in 1960, from the pole.

Ned Jarrett was the first driver, eleven races later, to win after starting outside the top ten, and it took 28 more races over 14 years, for someone (Donnie Allison) to do it again.

In fact, only 22 out of 102 races at Atlanta have been won from starting outside the top ten. In contrast, 26 races have been won from starting on the front row.

Four of the last five Atlanta races have been won by a driver whose name starts with the letter K. The fifth one was won by Carl Edwards, whose parents clearly misspelled his name.

This will be only the third September Cup race in Atlanta.

Eight past winners of Atlanta have gone on to be television commentators.

Jeff Gordon's car this weekend was designed with the help of his three-year-old daughter, Ella. Artist Sam Bass has already extended a job offer to young Miss Gordon.

The four races in 1968-69 were alternately won by Cale Yarborough, and LeeRoy Yarbrough. Then Cale, then LeeRoy. Mercury, Ford, Mercury, Ford.

Among active drivers, Bobby Labonte has the most wins here, with six. He also has two poles, and 12 top-five finishes out of 35 races he's run. If you throw in all drivers, only two have more wins than Bobby Labonte (Dale Earnhardt-9, and Cale Yarborough-7). Richard Petty also has six wins.

There have been two races at Atlanta every year since 1960, except in 1961 when there were three.

In 1986, Morgan Shepherd, in an unsponsored, part-time ride with Jack Beebe, beat Dale Earnhardt, when the #3 just couldn't pass him. He later went on to claim the last win for the Wood Brothers in Atlanta, who have more wins there than any other organization.

Ryan Newman and Buddy Baker are tied for the most poles won at Atlanta, with seven each.

Joe Gibbs will be giving the invocation this week. If you have aspirations of ever doing that at a race, pay attention - Coach will show you how it's done.

For $49 you can have stage-front access to the pre-race concert by Foreigner, followed by driver introductions. The package advertises that "You'll be so close, you might even be able to see the smaller sponsor patches on your favorite driver's uniform!" I can see small sponsor patches? Well, who wouldn't drop fifty bucks for THAT?

As a show of appreciation for fans attending the race on Sunday, Monday morning y'all can meet back between 7am-9am in the Nationwide Series garage and have a free breakfast, courtesy of Bruton Smith, sort of. It's billed as "Breakfast on Bruton", but also mentions that the event sponsors include Bimbo Bakery, Coca-Cola, Minute Maid, Dixie Paper Products, Wheaties Fuel, the Georgia Egg Commission, Sutherland Foods, Land-O-Lakes, and OCP Angus Farms. Raise your hand if you think Bruton's really paying for it. Still a nice thing, though.

Thanks for the shout-out to Morgan Shepherd, Carol! If I'm not mistaken, Morgan captured two of his three career wins at AMS (pre-reconfig).

I was at AMS in 1993, the race that Rusty Wallace won, and Dale Earnhardt captured the championship. After the checker, the two cars stopped on the track. Their respective crews brought out flags: a 28 for Rusty, and a 7 for Dale, to honor Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki who were lost earlier that year. The drivers then performed a side-by-side Polish Victory Lap, holding their flags out the window. I just watched the replay online, and I still get chills.

Checked out the Ella-designed 24, and it's pretty cute. It has "Papa's Car" over the window. Adorable!

Actually, there were also three races at Atlanta in 1986, if you count the one and only time The Winston was run at a track that was not Charlotte. They ran the race _on_ Mother's Day, before an extremely short crowd. NASCAR learned its lesson after that: Keep the race in Charlotte, and keep away from Mommy Day!

Betcha the Georgia Egg Commission is still stressing to people that the salmonella-infested eggs that were recalled all came from Iowa.

For $49, I can get close enough to see the drivers' sponsor patches???

No thanks!

Looking forward to some racing this weekend!!

Can't wait to see Ella's paint scheme on the 24, too sweet!

I will be paying attention to Joe Gibb's invocation, he'a a favorite, and yes... he will show how it should be done.

Gotta say I like Foreigner, if I were able to attend the race this weekend I would probably pay $49 bucks to see them up close and live.

Equally as excited about the start of College Football this weekend, (I know this is a Nascar site)... but... Roll Tide Roll! :)

IMO, if Lou Graham isn't the singer then Foreigner is not THE Foreigner and therefore I would have no interest in seeing them.

This post is for all the Dale Jr fans. I just happened to see this on a DVD website...
On Sept 14th a dvd is being released of the 2010 Subway Jalapeno 250 that Jr won in the Wrangler car. Just thought I'd mention it since I know there are one or two Jr fans that visit this site.

Foreigner being worth 49 bucks was about 20 yrs ago. That's with Lou Graham, if he's not with them, the track should be paying people to attend
If that's true about Sam Bass, he's a bigger dumbass than I thought.
Roll Tide roll......right downhill

@ Bill B

Thanks for that info, while I am not a die hard Jr fan, my husband is, so he would really like the DVD.
