Are We There Yet

The Soup Nazi Moved to Brooklyn (Michigan)

The last five races have been won by a driver with two syllables in his last name. That's not a stat you read everyday now, is it?

Ford has won nine of the last twenty races at MIS, so maybe we'll see another Roush win this week.

David Pearson has nine wins in 29 starts at this track, with 20 top-tens. His success over the years earned him less than $250,000.

Jeff Gordon, on the other hand, is the top money winner here with more than $3.4 million for just two wins. Maybe the difference in earnings is because he has three more top-tens than Pearson. Yeah, that's probably it.

The lowest money winner at Michigan is Lee Roy Carrigg who ran 11 laps in 1970 before his fuel pump allegedly went out and ended his day. He won $620 for his efforts. Guess what number he drove. Yes, it was #87. Do you suppose he was an original S&P driver?

Some of the best names to race at Michigan: Frog Fagan, Jocko Maggiacomo, Salt Walther, Slick Johnson, Friday Hassler, and of course, Coo Coo Marlin.

Giving the command to start this week is Virginia Craig, 17, of Hickory, N.C. She was born with spina bifida, and her wish (as granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and NASCAR) was to deliver those four famous words.

If you go to the MIS website, the first picture to load will be that of Danica Patrick. In addition to her "ticket offer" in the side bar, she's also featured in two of the eight rotating pictures in the slide show.

The track is in Brooklyn, Michigan, but hardly anyone ever mentions Brooklyn without also mentioning Irish Hills.

Population in Brooklyn is about 1,200 and they have seven churches, five banks, three golf courses, two laundromats, and just one Home Party Consultant.

There are 24 restaurants, only four of which are fast-food. There are three Wal-Marts within twenty miles of Brooklyn.

The village was founded by Calvin Swain in June of 1832, and he called his settlement Swainsville. The town voted to change the name just four years later to Brooklyn. Ingrates.

If you go to the race this weekend and are looking for something to do Friday night, there's a Big Band Dance at St. Joseph Shrine Family Center from 7:30pm-11:30pm.

Everything I read tells me the happenin' spot in town has to be The Beach Bar. Every Wednesday and Sunday, they have a "Patio Party" and local bands perform. They're at 3509 Ocean Beach Road.

If you're considering moving to the fine village of Brooklyn, Michigan, something you need to know is that there are 11 rules in the Village Curbside Brush Pick-up Policy. #11 specifically states that when putting out limbs and branches for the village chipper, they must not exceed five inches, AND they must be stacked neatly with the cut ends toward the street. "No messy piles will be chipped or hauled by the Village." Evidently the Soup Nazi has found a new calling, and he's living in the Village of Brooklyn, Michigan!

Brooklyn, Michigan. Ocean Beach Road.

I must have missed something in geography class.

I almost made the same mistake.
I did verify that 25 of the 39 current drivers (as listed on NASCAR.com) have two-syllable last names. And 14 of the top 17 drivers in the current points have two syllable names.
My only point here is that there are pretty good odds that the winner of any race will have a two syllable name.

Then it might be more impressive that 3 of the last 4 race winners (in this season, not at Michigan) have 3 syllables in their last names! Those last 4 winners include Reutimann, McMurray, (Biffle), and Montoya.

This is a weekly column (and widget) that pertain to the track where the series is headed to for the following race, hence the name "Are We There Yet?"

I'm glad you figured it out.

Hi Carol,

You wrote: "Some of the best names to race at Michigan: Frog Fagan, Jocko Maggiacomo, Salt Waither, Slick Johnson, Friday Hassler, and of course, Coo Coo Marlin."

Believe you mean Salt Walther (with an "el" not an "eye"). Walther was mainly an Indycar driver, who was involved in one of the nastiest accidents ever at the 1973 500 (which was perhaps most ill-fated 500 in history). Walther suffered serious drug problems in consequence of the painkillers he was prescribed for the burns he suffered at Indy, and is, I beleive, currently in jail due to his problems.

So what you're saying is I should consider wearing my glasses for the research part of it? Thanks for the tip. LOL

@ Carol:

LOL. You wouldn't beleive how long I stared to decide if that was an i or an l...even cleaned my screen to be sure.

Now I'm hoping that when you get to the funny names for Bristol, you'll include my favorite.

Any idea how many winners' cars had single-digit numbers?

THREE Wal-Marts? Too many folks running out of wwardrobe, & work boots?

You made this Brooklyn otherwise sound too good to be true. So how far is the nearest road that's their version of the San Diego Fwy. @ the 101? Same question, re the tribal casino run by Harrah's?

Friday Hassler.... My Dad has spoke of him many, many times!

Ah... the Soup Nazi.... "No soup for you"... well in this case... "No curbside brush pick up for you"!!

On a side note: Congrats to Jeff and Ingrid on the birth of lil Leo!! I am lovin that name!

I heartily agree with Pick-up Policy#11. Over 5" (this means around NOT in length) is used for firewood and should not be chipped.
