Are We There Yet

The Biggest Loser is Not Mark Martin

Mark Martin has the most starts at Daytona without a win among all current drivers. However, not to worry, he still has 18 more Daytona losses until he will pass Dave Marcis for the record.

Goodyear has added a special patriotic message to the tires for this week's race, and in red, white, and blue the message "Support Our Troops" will appear opposite the Goodyear logo. Unfortunately at speed, nobody will see them, so we're hoping TNT and SPEED gives airtime to this promotion.

The restrictor plates will be changed again, and this time they're increasing the openings by 3/64 of an inch so they'll be at 1 1/32" for this weekend only.

Saturday night's race may be the last race at Daytona as we know it, since the repaving is scheduled to begin after this race, and how that may change racing at the famed track is still a mystery.

Driver of the #36 car this Saturday night in the Coke Zero 400: Steve Park!

Vegas odds have Kyle Busch at 13/2 for Saturday night, but if you're lookin' to make some big money, Brad Keselowski's odds are 150/1. I never could resist the long-shot -- too bad I don't have a clue in the world how to place a bet. What do I do, Google "Omaha bookies"?

Have you seen the forecast for the Daytona weekend? If TNT can't fill 10 minutes at the end of a race broadcast, one can only wonder what they'll do for the inevitable rain delays.

In 1998 the Pepsi 400 was moved to October 17th because of wildfires in the area blowing smoke and soot on the track. Additionally, with area evacuations and road closures, it was decided to be in the best interest of fan safety to postpone the race. The track was used by area firefighters as a mess-hall for several days, feeding up to 250 people a day.

The postponed Pepsi 400 in 1998 was the first to be run under the lights at Daytona. Ken Schrader finished in ninth.

Tony Stewart has won 60% of the July Daytona races since 2005.

In 2008 the race sponsor switched from Pepsi to Coke. That year, Coca-Cola driver Kyle Busch won. Additionally, Jeff Gordon, a noted Pepsi driver and three-time winner of this race hasn't won it since the change. Hmmmm....

The Coke Zero fan guide specifically says "After the race, listen to 106.5 FM for traffic updates before exiting the parking lots." There's no mention what happens if you fail to follow this directive OR if you're caught listening to 106.5 FM after you exit the parking lots. Consider yourselves warned.

Making a joke of Steve Park? Sad...
106.5 for traffic updates...given your warning I have to chuckle, attending this and many Daytona races including Bike Week festivities, Daytona is EASY to get around if you use some common sense and read some maps(GPS units for the better equipped)before driving in. Daytona is a cinch to get in and out of.
Dont think the paving is going to effect the racing for the bad, it will be wicked quick and fast. (oh thats right, you thought they were gonna concrete pave the track...) Cant wait for the 2011 Daytona 500!
Hope Smoke Stewart takes the win.
Enjoy!

What?! I am NOT making a joke of Steve Park! I am THRILLED that he's back, hope he does fantastic, and that this is the first step back to the Cup level for him on a full-time basis.

I don't know what you tried to read between the lines there, but you missed the mark big time!

Brad K. at 150-1? Sounds a little off to me. I remember him doing pretty well at a restrictor plate race a year so so ago....

What, exactly, would an Omaha bookie take action on these days, anyway? I mean, UNL won't be playing for a few months, yet.

Maybe he can put up an over/under on the number of FDCs that NASCAR puts out, and how many laps from the finish the last one will be?

106.5 is probably a low-power station that only works a certain distance from the track, kind of like the ones that they use at the drive-in to play through your FM radio. Sometimes, if we leave the drive-in early, we'll leave the radio tuned, and see how long it takes for the signal to go away.

Yes, it is that exciting here in Our Fair City....

I agree that Daytona is easy to get in and out of. When I went in 1995, I parked off-site and hiked in. Was a breeze. The further you walk, the less you wait. That's Rule #3.

I, too, would like to see Steve Park run well at Daytona. Hopefully, he was able to scare up enough sponsor coin to run the whole race.

Don't worry about TNT having enough to do during rain delays, Carol. I don't recall them having a lot of trouble killing time at Pocono. TNT (well, for that matter, all of the networks) seem to have a much easier time telling you what kind of race you're going to see as opposed to what kind of race you just saw.

Hoping I remember to reset the timer on my DVD-HD, I remain....

Those are known as Entertainment Cautions and the standing orders are to throw one inside the last 15 laps.

After all Nascar can't have someone cross the finish line a half lap ahead even if it's JJ or Little E

Steve Park?!?!? You could also have said Lake Speed and I'd have the same reaction. "I wondered what happened to that guy!"

Yeah, I came to the 98 race both times, once was a July vacation, the other was a October long weekend.

Yeah for Steve Park

@Jem6973-

I was there in '98 for the July race that didn't happen, but couldn't make the trek back across the country for the October race.

Did get to see Daytona USA and do a tour of the track, but no race.

Unrelated to the cup race, I'm actually very interested in seeing the new cars in the Nationwide race this weekend! and on a Friday night! Go Mustangs!

I went to visit the car museum that used to be down the street from the tack, and I remember taking pictures of the outside, and it's just really hazy and smoky.

Town smelled like a barbecue.

Plus I drove I-4 there and you could see little fires on the side of the road. I saw a firetruck that said Largo Fire Department.
