"I believe anybody who tells you he is unbiased is a liar. Being human gives you bias, and you can't avoid that. The best you can ever hope to be is fair."

Farewell Historic Silverstone

I'm gonna take this opportunity to "pimp" the F1 British Grand Prix this weekend.  Not only is it the last time that the race will be held at Silverstone, its historic home, for the foreseeable future, it's entirely possible that it will be the final running of the British Grand Prix entirely, courtesy of Bernie's greed.  Silverstone was the site of the very first Formula One race ever (as opposed to the first Grand Prix--F1, technically, didn't exist until 1950, when the Formula One World Championship began), the site of Ferrari's first F1 victory a year later, and is a high-speed circuit with a number of overtaking opportunities every lap.

Some have even suggested that the current row between FOTA (the teams) and FIA (the sanctioning body) may make this the last Formula One race ever contested--which would be unfortunate, given that the racing in F1 has been better this year than in the past ten to fifteen years combined.

Since this is one of the four races per year that Speed's contract puts on Fox, the race is on at a highly accessible time for American viewers (should be 3PM Eastern, but, as always, check your local listings), and with the race at Sears Point starting at 5PM Eastern, that should have the broadcast ending just in time for you to flip over to TNT and catch the Cup race.

The Fox broadcasts include the same commentary crew that Carol raves about for the Speed broadcasts (and if you watched Le Mans last weekend, you heard some of the chemistry that David Hobbs and Bob Varsha have), and they do a very good job of providing new viewers with an accessible "F1 101" course during the broadcast without talking down to those who already know what "oversteer" and "understeer" are and what a diffuser does.

Add in the fact that the field is closer than I've ever seen it, from the front to the back, the jumbling of the grid by the new rules that have seen perennial back-markers at the pointy end of the grid, and the unbeatable superteams struggling just to score points, drivers seemingly having decided to throw caution to the wind now that they all have a genuine shot at the podium, and cars that are not glued to the pavement by their downforce any more, but instead are a bit twitchy and unbalanced, and you've got a recipe for a fun way to spend a couple of hours before the Cup race--particularly since, presumably, everyone will be in a road-racing mode this weekend, anyway.

So give it a try, folks!  Heck, if nothing else, you can sit there and be amazed that they found a way to get V-8s to turn 18,000 rpm for two hours without reducing themselves to very small bits of shredded aluminum.

I think it's a huge mistake to ditch Silverstone. There are but a handful of tracks that immediately come to mind when I think of F1, and Silverstone is in the top three.

But the good news is that a most unlikely winner (unlikely until this year, that is), might very well win at his home track, and he never would have expected to have his name tied to the last race at historic Silverstone.

Well, I'm glad I wasn't dreaming.

First I read the article then maybe 30 minutes later it was gone.

Most of the day it was gone.

Now it's back [the Relief Drivers section wasn't here at the first time I read the artical]

I just wish these 4 F1 races were on TV so I wouldn't have to wait until the rerun on Speed Tuesday afternoon [comcast has maybe 5 versions of fox but it doesn't have Fox Sports Net -- FSN]

So that means I'll know who won 3 days before I get to see the race.

Maybe someones DOG will do it's thing on Bernies shoes to make up for what he's done to F1 and Silverstone.

@jim88: These four aren't on FSN; they're on Fox proper, just like the Cup races in the first third of the season, though I've heard that some of the local affiliates have been known to pre-empt them for infomercials instead, so, as I said, check your local listings!
