"I believe anybody who tells you he is unbiased is a liar. Being human gives you bias, and you can't avoid that. The best you can ever hope to be is fair."

Hidden Meanings

The other day I wrote an article to preview the race at Texas, and I noted that the race would begin at 1:16pm. I emphasized the start time in bold because it was such a strange start time, I thought. Not 1:00 or 1:15 or 1:30. 1:16pm. Odd. There were ideas among the readers as to what that meant. Some thought it might be based on this being the 16th race at Texas. But one reader had initially thought it was some kind of hidden meaning that I was trying to convey. Maybe a hunch that driver #16, Greg Biffle, would win or maybe some other hidden message, because he'd been trained to look for things like that in my columns. I sensed he was almost disappointed that there was nothing to find between the lines.

Knowing that God often uses these same tactics when reminding me of life lessons, though, I wondered what I'd find if I looked up Scripture for 1:16. Yes, it might seem like just an arbitrary number, the start time of a NASCAR race, but into my head jumped the book of John. Not any other book, not any of the other Gospels, but John. What might be found in God's word in the book of John, chapter 1, verse 16?

From the fullness of his grace
we have all received one blessing after another.

Now think that over for a minute. I know we tend to be more thankful for our blessings around a certain holiday in November, but what about today? It's easy when the economy is on an up-swing, when we get a raise at work, or when a baby is born. But what about when times are lean and money is tight? What about when we are unemployed or in ill health? One blessing after another seems pretty cut and dry to me, though. It's a nature of continuous blessings, one blessing after another. And "from the fullness of his grace" is equally clear. The fullness of His grace. Not the part-time presence of His grace. Neither the half-portion of His grace. The fullness of His grace is so big that the start time of a race in Texas brings mindful awareness of our blessings one after another.

The media is all about the state of the economy and sometimes I fall into believing them. But isn't it just money? Isn't it just temporary wares of this world that will all pass away? I am blessed with friends. And with health. I can see and hear and taste and smell and touch. And why?

Because of the fullness of God's grace.

And now the meaning of the Texas start time is no longer hidden from me, for my blessings just keep on coming, one after another, just as promised to us all.

From the fullness of his grace,
we have all received one blessing after another.

-- John 1:16

Thanks for you being led by God and His son to share with your readership how much the Good Lord means to you. What signs He can leave with us in just something as simple as the start times to a race is amazing and wonderful, the little blessings that come to us every day....ahhhh

You know, believe it or not, my first thought when I saw that number was that if it was a hidden message it might be a Bible verse. I couldn't attach any other significance to the number and I've been visiting this site far too long not to know that was a possibility. So, you didn't let me down.

I love that verse.

Isn't it awesome how God works, when you seek him, you can find him within anything, anywhere, at anytime.
