Sorry about last week.. We were prepared for a Saturday night race, but not so much on Sunday. Some kind of plague is wreaking havoc at the RJO Main Office, and sneezing and coughing are rivaling the sounds of race car engines. But we press on, and we're in Kansas this weekend! Should be 70 today, but so far it's fog and drizzle. And someone reported some rain that isn't officially happening because nobody's willing to report it as such. Still cool outside, and we're even willingly drinking the infamous coffee.

Again this time, we're staying in Topeka, a lovely place about 45 minutes from the track (and a $3 toll) because someone (okay, ME) is being picky, persnickity, and maybe a little immature about the formerly-favored hotel that's right across the street from the track. They changed managers and though I was promised one thing in the spring, she went back on what she said, denied having said it, and then was a little rude to this customer about my accommodations. So to complete the severing of my nose to prove a point to my face, naturally I stopped staying there. Yes, I was staying for free, so it's to their benefit that I stay elsewhere on race weekend, but the girl at the Topeka hotel had a great smile that got even bigger when I told her how we prefer driving in from Topeka versus staying across the street from the track because the hotel staff is far superior. I hope she tells her manager. And the manager at Kansas City West, too.

Dave is reporting from the track as well, and our hope is to finally get him sitting next to the infamous Brett Bodine for a couple of pace laps. That should be happening Sunday morning.

My overhearing (sure, in some circles, people call it eavesdropping) skills need some refining. I just overheard that a driver's kids aren't allowed to do the Halloween thing, but didn't hear which driver. I know it's either Matt Kenseth or Carl Edwards. My money is on Edwards, but maybe I'll find out later. Being a non-halloweener myself, I think that's pretty cool. In the world not of the world.

The photo meeting was 9am today to get our blue Kodak photo vests. Look for 049 or 037 if you see any blue-vesters on TV. I'm the 049, so I'm choosing to root for Ken Schrader this weekend. Dave will be rooting for Bobby Allison.

Looking up driver names for the #37 just now, I realized that's one cursed car. It has one win only, and that was with Bobby Isaac. Some names that have been behind the wheel in addition to Bobby Allison are his brother Donnie, Neil Bonnett, Bill Elliott, Mark Martin, and Bobby Labonte. And still just one win.

So the bathrooms in the media center are currently unavailable. This means, until they are fixed, we have to go out to the garage to use the facilities. Naturally, on my first trip out there, I'm stopped by a very conscientious yellow-vested track worker who insists that my photo ID not just be presented, but be slid inside my credentials hanger. He proceeds to explain to me that NASCAR did an internal audit, surveying all the workers, and determined that the proper amount of diligence was not being carried out. Suddenly I find myself looking into the eyes of Charlie Brown's teacher, and then looking beyond him as I gaze toward the garage toilet. Please, I'm at your mercy, yellow vest, and I really, REALLY have to go!

Dave is off taking photos of Jimmie Johnson, introduced as "the only Hendrick driver to get a good night's sleep this week". I wonder if he called Junior to check on his sleep quality. After JJ, Martin Truex will be visiting the media center.

If Jimmie doesn't win, he wants Chase Elliott to win, "But if there's a duel at the end of this race between us and the 24, I'm gonna try to win this race!"

Someone just asked Jimmie if he felt "irrelevent" last year when he wasn't in The Chase. Wow. Humble as ever, but he seemed almost hurt by the question. He said he didn't feel that way at all, though.

Just asked if he felt HMS would be hurt at all by the departure of SHR. Jimmie corrected the perception that Stewart Haas was helping Hendrick at all. "They were getting info from us, we weren't getting anything from them. They were getting our best stuff." I think he just basically said, "Look, sister, Tony needs Hendrick more than Hendrick needs Tony." Asked if he thought Hendrick should or would actively recruit another organization to fill that spot, it didn't sound like he thought so.

Jimmie called Tony a great friend -- after you get the helmet off of him.

"only Hendrick driver to get a good night's sleep"...I wonder if someone knows more about Earnhardt's future status as a driver than we do.

(altho, I'm reasonably sure Gordon got a good night's sleep, and he's still a Hendrick driver for another race or two).

Sad but one more - martinsville according to the latest
listings. Stay home, put AB in the car, gordon means nothing to tv/ticket revenue.
Can't wait for 3min of tv coverage on the 88,
unless he has an incident requiring babble from the booth.
