How'd He Do That?

Harvick Finishes First in Phoenix!

Category: How'd He Do That?

Kevin Harvick took the checkers at Phoenix this week, but how'd he do that?

After careful review, the RJO staff consensus has boiled it down to the following key factors resulting in Victory for the #4.

4. Slow and Steady wins the race. Despite his sponsor being "freaky fast", Harvick hung around the top ten until after the half-way point in the race. Taking no risks, and not wearing out his car too soon, he remained consistently within striking distance to be there when it counted.

3. Staying out on the last caution. He was in the lead already, so there were no positions to be gained, but more importantly, he didn't LOSE any spots. Granted, had he pitted, he may have still been able to make those spots up again, but as the old adage goes, a bird in the hand is worth a Busch in fourth place.

2. Never lifting! Carl Edwards gave Harvick every reason to swing wide to avoid the door-to-door combat, but Kevin wouldn't hear of it. It was as if we saw, in the attitude of his car slamming against his competitor, every mentor that has ever told him, "Keep your foot on it, son, and don't you dare lift!"

1. It's Phoenix. It's Harvick. 'Nough said.

And be sure to check out Eddie's reports from Phoenix and his adventures that include a chat with Ryan Newman, rubbing elbows with Mike Helton, and a brush with the famous Ponytail!

Gosh folks. Did I just read a description of the Silver Fox, David Pearson??? :)

I don't know whigbee, was David Pearson enough of DB to wreck 10 cars on a restart at Talladega just to benefit himself? I really don't know. Pearson was before my time so maybe he would have.

"A bird in the hand is worth a Busch in fourth place..." I LOVE it!! Where is that little laughing face emoji when I need it?! Great job, Carol!

@Bill B - Dunno your question can be answered - back then we didn't have huge packs at Dega, or a Chase, or even anyone who gave a darn about points, so Pearson was never in the situation in question.

You could ask Petty about being brake-checked by Pearson in the draft (or ask him about Allison, or Yarborough, or ask Allison about Pearson, or Pearson about Yarborough, or Pearson about Petty, or Yarborough about Allison, or....the top drivers in that era didn't exactly play nice all the time...)

Jeers - Another botched Anthem - sad
Hey Target boy, take off your hat when
Cheers - Nice to see 500mil total new
f-35's, hope they fix them correctly in the
next 5 years, my tax dollars at work.
A cheer jeer - love the crewchiefs pushing
the tire-brake limit, too loose, too bad,
pop goes the bead when your trying to push it.
Have a great day Carol!

All those example involve one on one duels which are expected and even promoted. Harvick's "richard" move was totally selfish and showed utter disregard for his competitors and any sense of fair play or code of ethics. I know you like him but you are basically making excuses for your child's bad behavior instead of giving him the spanking he deserves.

@Bill B - yeah, that was sort of the point. Pearson et al were never in the situation Harvick was in. We know they "played rough", but we have no way of knowing what they would have done in Harvick's situation.
