Inside Ed's Head

Today is 3/14/15, and if you haven’t heard- that means it is Pi Day.  I expected pie to be served in the media center, and I was disappointed.   No apple pie, no lemon meringue pie, no pi shaped pie. I did get a pretzel though.

Interesting tidbit: Do you know what the high dollar XFINITY teams do after qualifying at Phoenix?   They get ready for California.  Immediately after qualifying is over, they load the backup Phoenix cars into unmarked trailers and ship them home. All the Roush cars go in one, the Gibbs cars into another, etc.  Meanwhile, they load California cars into the haulers and get them ready to head west.  Gone are the days of the California car being the backup for Phoenix, and vice versa.

For the record:  as much as I love being a mechanic, and as much as I love racing, I’m not sure I could combine the two- at least not at this level.  I would love to work on a racecar again, but at this level there are so many people walking around all day long getting in your way.  It boggles my mind to see how often, and flagrantly, spectators can get in the way of work going on.  It’s like working retail two days before Christmas, but a whole lot dirtier and messier- and everyone has a camera.

FYI- Carol gets more annoyed at you using the word “conversating” than she does at misspelling “Busch” with an ‘I’.

The XFINITY race is today… wait… Can we just call it the XFINIwidebush Series from now on?  I just did get used to calling it the Nationwide series.  Well, mostly.

Anyway, as I was saying: the XFINITY race is today, and Logano and Harvick are on the front row, and in reverse of how they will start the Cup race tomorrow. Today Logano is on the pole, with Harvick second. Remember how I said Harvick was strong in Cup?  Well, Logano is strong in XFINITY.  He’s gonna be very tough to beat later.

Carl Long is in the XFINITY race.  And he has one pit crew member.  Pretty sure he is not planning on making a pit stop today.

Speaking of pit stops, last night was the NASCAR Mexico series Toyota 120 race (won by Ruben Pardo.)  This series has pit stop rules that include not pitting for both tires and fuel on the same stop. You have to pick one or the other. That’s not too strange, as we’ve seen that before, early on  in the truck series. What I haven’t seen though: they are only allowed one pit gun for pit stops.  The tire changer changes one tire, then goes to the other tire. One at a time. Slowest pit stops ever.

Most oblivious thing I learned today?  The Xfinity cars have the drivers name on the back window.  Not sure why I didn’t ever notice that before.  Has it been that way for long?

The XFINITY race was a bit tame, and as everyone expected, Logano ran off with it.  Matt Kenseth gave him a minor challenge, but not much.  Elliott Sadler had some early issues (spark plug wire off is what I heard,) and Chase Elliott spun late in the race after contact with Ty Dillon. Both Elliott and Elliott made up for earlier trouble, though, and got decent finishes, and it was rather nostalgic to see the #3 and #9 battling on track like that.

If you have been a follower of my silly little area of racejournalonline.com for a while, you may remember I mentioned how the bathroom door in the media center didn't latch very well.  Now, not only does it latch properly, but they have a little table with candies and lotions on it!  Isn’t that precious!

The media center cleared out fast today after the race- in fact, I'm the only one still here in the downstairs area.  Before they all left, one of the other photographers was hitting on one of the track workers.  He gave her his business card and said she should call or text if she wants to hang out later this evening.  She took it, and said, and I quote: “Cool, what’s your name?”
“It’s there on the card…”
"Oh."
End quote.

I just watched a guy repaint the start finish line.  Cool.

Today was a good day at the track.

Yes, that non-word drives me crazy! As well as sister words such as "reservate". You cannot simply take a noun that ends with -ation, and replace the suffix with -ate to form a verb. Are there some dictionaries that have caved to ghetto-speak and added it? Yes, you can find some that will list it as a word, but it is not. You CONVERSE. And if you don't like that, you can feel free to talk, chat, speak, or discuss.

And when you're done with that, you can call and reserve a table for dinner. But you can NOT freaking reservate ANYTHING!!

Yeah...it's kind of a thing for me.
