More to Life

Time Travel from Noah to NASCAR

Some of you may know I'm a Doctor Who fan. For those who aren't, or are unfamiliar with the BBC series, The Doctor can travel anywhere in space and time (and usually does so to save our world or another from some form of nefarious aliens) in his time machine known as the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space). Here's your first tie-in, but not the last or most significant - TARDIS is a six letter acronym like NASCAR. See, now you want to keep reading, don't you?

So recently, someone asked me if I could go anywhere in space and time, where would it be? Pondering that possibility, some ideas came to mind that I'd never before considered. Given that I have no "space" desires except perhaps the moon, my list covers Bible times to NASCAR.

My first trip would be to go back and visit Noah. I'd like to see him and his sons building that ark. Just to see the scale of it, and to see the animals start to come. I'd rather like to be gone before the rain started, though. While I was there, I could also finally find out Noah's wife's name.

Then I'd like to hear Jesus preach. And as surprising as this might be, I'd like to see the crucifixion. I think it would have a profound effect on my life to see what was done for me. In modern terms, I've committed a crime worthy of death. I've been tried, convicted, and sentenced. I deserve the punishment. But then something amazing happened to me -- some innocent guy showed up, put his hand on my shoulder, and told the judge, "I'd like to pay her penalty for her, please. Yeah, yeah, I know I didn't do anything. But still, I'll die in her place." Oh, and of course, I'd hang around three more days after that to see Him walk out of that tomb.

Next, I'd like to go back to 1939 and see Glenn Miller's Orchestra live, and dance in an old-fashioned dance hall to Moonlight Serenade. Yes, this is definitely on my TARDIS Bucket List! It's that time of year when some people (including yours truly) get a little blue. So if you feel it starting to come on, do yourself a favor, and pop in some Glenn Miller (And for that sad feeling, I recommend In The Mood) that you can find online or at iTunes.

And while I'm in the neighborhood of that era, I might like to go back and spend awhile in the 1950s and live a little bit of the life that June and Ward Cleaver enjoyed. With a white picket fence, of course.

Now just like the lessons learned by Marty McFly, there's a long-held understanding in the world of Doctor Who that when you go back in time, you're not supposed to fiddle around with things. I also know that everything happens for a reason, so to go back and alter unpleasant events would be to fool around with God's plan, and nothing good can come of that.

For example I'd love to go back to February 18th, 2001 at Daytona International Speedway, and somehow influence Dale Earnhardt not to get in his race car that day... but when I think of it, I know doing so might spare one man's life, but cost countless others who have been saved in the years since his death. That fateful day we all know what was lost, but in the years since, we can see what was GAINED on that day. A new understanding of danger; a new commitment to safety and technology; so many lives saved because of Dale Earnhardt's death that we've lost count of them all!

So having said that, I know I shouldn't alter the outcome of the day. It is, as The Doctor would say, a "fixed point in time." Nothing can ever change it because it was so important in future events. However, there is one thing I would change about it. I'd make it so the ambulance personnel were the first ones to reach him, and not Ken Schrader. Men and women are trained to handle such scenes with a certain amount of emotional detachment - I don't wish it on anyone, but I so wish it OFF of Dale Earnhardt's friend, Ken Schrader. We all carry the visual images of the 3 car in the wall that day, but I can't fathom the visual images carried by Schrader.

Now I'd hate to end on a sad thing like that, so I stretched to think of at least one more place to go in the TARDIS, and I think I've decided on the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair for ice cream -- in an edible cone! There is, after all, more to life than NASCAR.

When I think about that day I do not picture the car in the wall, I picture Ken Schrader walking away from the car. That was when I knew we had lost Dale.

Carol, you always have the innate ability to make me smile, and often laugh out loud, but this column sent immediate chills through my heart. I was a relatively new NASCAR fan (that was only my 4th Daytona 500), but few things reduce me to tears more quickly than coverage and discussions around that day. You are so right - he changed the NASCAR world irrevocably - both with his life and with his death, but oh yes, I wish Ken Schrader had not been the one at that window. My heart breaks every time I see him gesturing frantically to the emergency personnel...(and thank you, for the others - an interesting perspective into Carol-isms!)

Great Scott Carol!!! Don't you know that going back in time could have grave consequences. Plus, I doubt you could generate the 1.21 jigawatts needed to power the flux capacitor.

Hmmmm, that's a tough question,,,,
Maybe witness the beginning and end of the earth as we know it (an inner need I have to always want to know how the story ends).

I, too, would be amazed to see the Ark being built, and to hear Jesus preach??? That would be amazing- although I wouldn't likely understand a bit of it, lol

and I echo your sentiments about Schrader as well. :/

But BillB,
I'm not sure I would want to see anything in the future. That would just drive me insane when I got back to my real time. Do I do this (or do I do that??) to get the outcome I am now expecting?? Too much pressure for me, lol

Cool column Carol :)
