From an ESPN press release:

Quotes from Joey Logano on ESPN SportsCenter

In his first on-camera interview since the controversial ending to the March 24 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Fontana, Calif., driver Joey Logano appeared on the 6 p.m. ET edition of ESPN SportsCenter in an exclusive interview with ESPN lead NASCAR reporter Marty Smith. Some quotes from the interview:

MARTY SMITH -- How did what happened at Bristol impact your relationship with Denny Hamlin?

JOEY LOGANO  Ė Well, you feel like you got done wrong, alright? You know got spun out. So it doesnít help that relationship, obviously. And yes, did I remember who I was racing against? Yes. Obviously I know who Iím racing against and what happened a week before but going into turn three on the last lap, I remember ĎIím going to win the race.í My number one goal is to go win a race. So did I intentionally wreck him? No, I did not intentionally do that. If I was going to do that I would have hit him in the left-rear tire. I hit him in the door. Itís hard racing at that point. I hate that he got hurt. I feel like the comments after the race that I made were taken way out of context. My mind wasnít straight and I didnít know Denny was hurt. There was no way for me to know. And it got taken way out of context.

SMITH -- I talked to Carl Edwards once couple of years ago in an interview like this and he told me that you have to stand your ground as a race car driver Ö

LOGANO Ė Yeah you have to stand up for yourself. Weíre racing against the same people every weekend and you have to put your foot down and show them that youíre out here to win a race, youíre out here to stand strong and youíre doing that for your whole team.

SMITH -- Whatís it like to hear from a peer (Tony Stewart), a guy that you previously Ö took his car, ok, that got you into the Cup Series, say, itís, quote, a rich kid who never had to work Ö

LOGANO Ė You can say it the same way as my comments made after my race Ė heat of the moment. Our sport, we donít have time to take a deep breath, give me 15 minutes to regain my thoughts, and what the heck just happened, and let me watch a replay and see all this. Iím the same Joey Logano Iíve always been. Iím still happy-go-lucky. Iím very competitive. Thatís never going to change, you know what I mean? Iím still who Iíve always been. But I donít get walked on.

I believe the haulers and the inspection line should be off limits to reporters. Give the drivers a safe haven to cool down and review the footage before a microphone is in their face.

@ ADB:

Something to that, but on the other hand without spur-of-the-moment comments, what would we have to talk about? Is any real harm done by them? The name of the NASCAR game is entertainment, and that sort of commentary and the minor spats and rivalries it produces are entertaining to the folks who pay for it all (namely, us).

And, since we missed C&J this week:

Jeers to Brian France, for basically confirming he has no clue (that's in reference to his interview where he took responsibility for Hamlin's fine).

Jeers to Ryan Newman, for speaking up out of turn (that's in reference to saying blocking is "a chicken way of driving", apparently without thinking about his boss's record, or having much clue how F1 and Indycar run their races).

Jeers that Ralph Sanchez, who gave us the Grand Prix of Miami back in the old GTP days, and then built the Homestead speedway, passed away on Monday.

Joey seems honest, and I respect him for that.

I have read Denny's recent comments, and I think he is being ridiculous. Once again, as with Stewart, I guess he has forgotten how he as reacted in the past. Denny has a habit of running his mouth.... and I really think he needs to just shut up.

So looking forward to Martinsville!!

@possum How was Ryan speaking up out of turn? He was asked by the media his opinion of blocking & he told them honestly...in spite of Tony being his boss.
@a different Bill I agree...there should be a place for them to have a minute before speaking to media. With Tony they obviously had the time since every othere word was bleeped so I guess cooling off isn't as quick for some drivers. But I still agree with the giving them some space.
